Why I Resigned as Minister of Power - Bart Nnaji Speaks

In a move aimed at salvaging the reform and privatisation programme of the power sector, President Goodluck Jonathan Tuesday in Abuja accepted the resignation of one of the key members of his cabinet, Professor Bart Nnaji as Minister of Power, with immediate effect.

The president was said to have decided to accept the resignation, following Nnaji’s admission that companies linked to him had submitted bids for one of the successor companies created from the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

However, speaking to THISDAY Tuesday night on his decision to leave the cabinet, Nnaji said he opted to resign in order to save the privatisation and reform programme from those who might want to use ulterior motives to bring down the programme.
Nnaji said he had met with the president Tuesday afternoon, during which he (president) informed him (Nnaji) that he was using his company as a proxy to buy shares on behalf of the president in Afam power station through the privatisation process.
On hearing this, he informed the president that rather than drag him (Jonathan) and the entire process through the mud, he would prefer to resign but reminded the president that he had brought it to his attention two weeks ago that a company he owned was part of a bidding consortium that had submitted bids for Enugu Distribution Company.

Maine Woman Gives Birth to Own Grandson

The arrangement sounds a little strange, but Hebert, 25, has a heart condition that made it too dangerous for her to get pregnant. Her cardiologist said it would be risky for both her and her baby. "It was pretty disappointing," she says. She and her husband are high school sweethearts who started dating eleven years ago.
Previously mom had told Hebert she was willing to carry a baby for her. Now it was time to see if she really meant it. "I called her last summer," Hebert told the Herald Press. "And I'm like, 'So, you know that offer...Is that offer still on the table?'"
Sirois reached out to fertility clinics around New England. Many rejected her because of her age, but the Reproductive Science Center in Lexington, Massachusetts agreed to impregnate her by in-vitro fertilization (IVF) using Hebert's egg fertilized with Brian's sperm. She had to undergo a number of tests and the process was complicated, but on December 13, Sirois learned she was pregnant. The mom of four says it was her easiest pregnancy. "I felt good and had no complications."
"She is amazing. I couldn't have asked for a better mother. It's such a great and selfless gift she has given us," Hebert told the newsletter of the Aroostock Medical Center where Madden was born. "She brought her grandson into the world and we now have our beautiful baby boy. We are all super excited."
Sirois says it was the natural thing for any mother to do for her daughter. "I was just 'babysitting' for a short time… I was fortunate and blessed to be a part of this experience and be able to help bring him into the world." She will have plenty more babysitting ahead: in June, her oldest daughter, Kristin Duval, 26, gave birth to Sirois's first grandson, Everett. Babies and moms are all doing fine.

53 Year Old Man who Constantly Drug & Rape His Daughter

A 53-year-old trader, Nzewi Donatus is currently facing a two-count charge at the Ojo Magistrate court, Lagos, for having canal knowledge of his daughter, Oluchi Nzewi, 18, without her consent which is an offense under section 258 of the criminal laws of Lagos state .
He is also being charged for threatening to kill one Ngozi Emeka, for reporting him to the police which is punishable under section 56 of the criminal laws of Lagos state Nigeria. Donatus was reported to the police by Ngozi Emeka who is a friend to the deceased wife of Donatus after he, (Donatus) chased his daughter out of the house because she accused him of having sex with her.
According to Oluchi, who appeared before the court “My father has been having sex with me whenever I am asleep and there is this drink he always forced me to drink before I sleep and when I wake up, I do noticed sperm all over my body. When I asked him, he will deny it and warn me never to ask him such question”.
On the 15th day of August when I woke up, I noticed such on my body again and this time, I was bold enough to ask him but when I did, he beat me up and sent me out of the house. So, I went to one Ngozi for shelter and when I narrated my pains to her, she quickly ran to the police to file a report”
    , she lamented.
Donatus allegedly chases away any male friend that comes visiting his daughter. Some people who never knew his reasons for doing such thought he was preventing them from the corrupt society little did they know that he was doing so for his own selfish interest.
When the charges were read to him by the prosecutor, Supol Eze, he pleaded not guilty but the presiding Magistrate, Mrs J.O.E Akhanamaya, rejected his bail and he was remanded at kirikiri prison custody for further hearing of his case.

Storm 360 Company; Obi Asika sacks Olisa Adibua as a director

Obi Asika (Storm 360 CEO) released a statement yesterday stating that Olisa Adibua (Beat FM On-Air-Personality) is no longer a director in Storm 360 company. Read the statement below..
Storm 360 confirms that Mr Olisa Adibua is no longer a director of the company. This decision was reached at a properly constituted company EGM. Mr Adibua was a non-executive director of Storm 360 and has never been involved in the management and operations of Storm 360. The company will not engage in public discussions about its internal business operations. Storm is facing forward and continues to build upon its position as a leading light in Nigeria’s entertainment industry and community.
Thank you, Board and Management of Storm 360 – Obi Asika.
Olisa Adibua's response to the sack below

‘As a director and founding shareholder of storm 360 Ltd, my attention has been drawn to certain unfounded statements in the media about my alleged removal as director of the company
There is therefore need to clear the air and put right the mis-stated facts leading to the said publication.
Sometime in 2011 my attention as a director of the company was drawn to certain huge and unauthorized withdrawals running on the company’s Naira and Dollar accounts. Not having been supplied any explanation and having noted the fact that the debits were to the benefit of unauthorized persons, the matter was reported to d police for investigation.
All efforts to get the other members of the board to assist in the investigations proved futile and while the investigations were on-going, a meeting of the company was hastily called in which no notice was served on me and in which the deliberations was conducted in the most clandestine manner.
For failing to comply with legal requirements for such meeting, my solicitors have commenced the necessary legal process to contest the glaringly invalid removal and set same aside.
The investigations into the fraudulent misappropriation of the company’s funds are still on and upon conclusion will reveal all the perpetrators of the fraud against the company which I and the other well-meaning members of the company have striven to build.
The public is advised to ignore such unabashed campaign of calumny as both criminal investigations and judicial proceedings are on-going which will eventually set the records straight. For the avoidance if doubt, I still remain a member of the board of the company and any claims to the contrary are completely false  – -Olisa Adibua

Al-Qaeda plots attacks on Nigeria, Ghana, others

While we are still struggling with Boko Haram, international intelligence agencies have uncovered plans by al-Qaeda, to launch fresh attacks on Nigeria, Ghana and two other African countries.
Al-Qaeda, which was founded by the late Osama bin Laden, has launched attacks all over the world.
Investigations by SUNDAY PUNCH authoritatively showed that the targeted countries were receiving help from Western nations on how to prevent the onslaught.
late Osama bin LadenThe Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Frank Mba, confirmed the al-Qaeda plot to Punch correspondent. Mba, however, noted that such threats were received in the past, and added that security agencies were determined to ensure the group’s plan did not succeed.
According to him, the police are receiving immense support from developed countries that have counter- terrorism expertise.
Mba said, “That al-Qaeda and similar groups want to attack some certain countries is not new. As security operatives, we treat information at our disposal with uttermost care. We test their veracity and analyse them.
“Here in Nigeria, we stop most of the domestic attacks before they take place. We defuse more bombs than they detonate. We save thousands of lives daily but we do this discretely and quietly.
“More than ever, we have so much support from the international community. We are getting help from both ECOWAS and western countries. We are doing our best with the resources we have and we will continue to do so. “We have stepped up security everywhere but we won’t disclose how we are doing that and the specifics of our mechanisms. “I want to assure Nigerians and the international community that government is irrevocably committed to its mandate of providing adequate security in the country.”
Ghana, another country on the radar of al-Qaeda, last Tuesday stepped up security at its Kotoka International Airport, Accra, with heavy deployment of soldiers, who frisked passengers using metal detectors.
Armed troops are not a regular feature in Kotota and Ghanaians described the movement of troops as strange.
On Tuesday, Daily Guide, a newspaper in Ghana, had reported that, “Nigeria, three others are said to be on the radar of the terrorist group. Ghana is also said to be on a hit list of an international terrorist group, leading to deployment of soldiers at the Kotoka International Airport, Accra.
“It was learnt that the action of the military was informed by international intelligence fed to Ghana that the country was one of four others being targeted by terrorists for bombing. The presence of the soldiers is therefore a national security response to the alert, a source said.”
Just on August 3, 2012, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom warned travellers to Ghana that there was an “underlying threat from terrorism” in the country.
“Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by expatriates and foreign travellers,” it said.
Al-Qaeda‘s foot prints abound in Nigerian as it has cells in the northern part of the country and had also claimed responsibility for some terrorist activities.
In April, the State Security Service arrested Mohammed Ashafa said to be al-Qaeda linkman with a terror group in Nigeria.
Ashafa was reportedly apprehended by the Pakistani government through the National Intelligence Agency and handed over to the Federal Government for prosecution.
When he was arraigned at the Federal High Court, the SSS told the court that the accused person facilitated terrorist exchange programmes between al-Qaeda and its allies in the country.
The intelligence agency further said its investigations showed that Ashafa was allegedly the second in command to one Adnan Ibrahim, who was said to be the Resident al-Qaeda chief in West Africa, but based in Kano.

Police arrest Lagos Island gang members

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested 16 men suspected to be members of two rival gangs known as O Strong and Get ready.
It was learnt that the gang members were the ones causing mayhem on the Island. Some people had lost their lives due to the frequent gang clashes and extortion scams by the members.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects were arrested in the early hours of Saturday during a raid authorised by the Area A Commander, Imohimi Edgal.
Scene of clash in Lagos.According to community leaders on Lagos Island, the suspects had been terrorising the residents, traders and their customers with impunity for months.
Their activities prompted the Alagba/Obadina/Pash-Willoughby/Seriki-Akanni Joint Community Development Association to write a petition to the Area Commander.
The petition reads in part, “This is to formally report the resurgence of hoodlums in our community in recent times. These hoodlums consist of young men that have formed the habit of terrorising people in the community.
“They usually operate in large groups and fight each other. They then use the opportunity to rob innocent residents.”
According to the CDA the hoodlums were also complicit in the National Union of Road Transport Workers crisis in January.
It alleged that the hoodlums usually hijacked every gathering in the community and robbed people.

Businessman accuses police of unlawful detention, harassment

Former Group Managing Director, Quintessentially Nigeria, Okon Iyanam, has accused the Nigeria Police of unlawful detention and harassment.
PUNCH Metro had reported on August 10, 2012, that the Police Headquarters Annex, Obalende, Lagos, had quizzed Iyanam over a N50m fraud allegedly perpetrated by him when he was GMD of the company.
IG, AbubakarThe firm, headed by Mr. Festus Odimegwu, had written a petition to the IG, shortly after Iyanam resigned from the company.
Iyanam alleged that it was at the behest of Odimegwu that policemen harassed and detained him for over 48 hours.
In a petition written by Iyanam’s lawyer, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, and addressed to the Inspector General of Police, Muhammed Abubakar, he expressed disappointment that the police allowed themselves to be used as tools to harass and intimidate an innocent person.
He also dismissed the allegations by the company as baseless and a smear campaign.
He said, “On August 5, 2012, one Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr. Ben Okolo, with armed policemen, stormed Iyanam’s residence in Lekki to effect arrest allegedly acting on the IG’s order. They also claimed to have a search warrant that entitled them to search Iyanam’s house.
“However, Iyanam was out of town but spoke to Mr. Okolo and promised to come to the Police Headquarters Annex, Lagos.
“On getting there on August 7, my client and I appeared before the police but we were informed that he was under arrest based on a petition from Odimegwu who had made allegations of fraud among other things against my client.
“At this point, Okolo said my client would be transported to Abuja at 3pm and that a flight had been booked. My client was not allowed to prepare for the trip but was forced in ‘Gestapo’ fashion under armed guard to embark on the trip to Abuja.
“When my client arrived in Abuja at 9pm, he was immediately taken to the Police Headquarters where he was forced to write a statement that he completed at 12am. Thereafter, he was transferred to Area 10 Police Headquarters where he was detained for 48 hours. My client, who has a medical history, was denied access to his family, doctor, drugs and was also refused bail.”
Kazeem said Iyanam was later granted bail on stiff conditions.
Efforts to get the spokesman for Nigeria Police Force, Mr. Frank Mba, to comment proved abortive as calls made to his telephone rang out while a text message sent to him was not replied.
