FG’ll reintroduce tollgates on federal roads –FERMA

Chairman of the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, Ezekiel Adeniji, has said the Federal Government will soon reintroduce tollgates to federal roads across the country. Adeniji, who spoke in an interview with online journal, Economic Confidential, on Saturday in Abuja, said it would generate revenue for government and jobs for Nigerians. He did not, however, give a specific date for the reintroduction of tollgates.

Adeniji said, “Tolling is universal for revenue generation and job creation. In developed countries, there is no place you go to that you don’t pay toll for the roads you use.

“If you are paying for water, electricity and communication, why can’t you pay for good roads? We will have more revenue to maintain the roads.

“Because when you toll, you get more revenue, you create more jobs and you have funds to maintain the roads.”

Man dies after soldiers’ brutality

Adewale Olupitan-Hazzan

Soldiers attached to the Flag House, Force Road, Lagos, have been accused of killing a 61-year-old man, Adewale Olupitan-Hazzan. It was learnt that the soldiers who were driving in a military convoy on Ikorodu Road on July 15 went on the rampage and brutalised Adewale, a road user, for allegedly breaking the side mirror of one of the vehicles in their convoy. It was gathered that Adewale was bundled out of his Toyota Camry and thoroughly beaten by the soldiers at the Obanikoro end of Ikorodu Road.

Adewale’s younger brother, Adedotun, said his brother even up till the time of his death, insisted that he did not do anything wrong to warrant such brutality.

He said, “He said when he heard the sound of the siren, he slowed down and adjusted to pave the way for them but was taken aback when the last car in the convoy, a Peugeot 407, marked NA 01AO, parked beside him. “He said before he knew it, the soldiers bundled him out of his car beat him up and hit him repeatedly with the butts of their guns.”

Female teacher accused of defiling three-year-old pupil

Detectives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, Lagos, are currently investigating a teacher, Patience Orunma, for allegedly defiling a three-year-old pupil at a private school in Berger, Ojodu in Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the victim’s mother spotted blood in the pupil’s private part on June 21 when bathing her.

On inquiry, the victim told her mother that the teacher used a pencil to prick her vagina in the school toilet.

The victim also reportedly said after she was defiled, the teacher used a white piece of cloth to clean the blood.

A detective at the SCID, who craved anonymity, said the victim’s parents immediately challenged the school authorities and later reported the matter to the Isheri Police Division when they were not satisfied with the school’s response.

Jonathan will never resign – Abati

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday said that he would neither resign nor convert to Islam as demanded by the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

“The President cannot be intimidated by any group or individual. The President will never resign. He has the mandate of Nigerians to serve his father land and nobody should imagine that he will succumb to blackmail,” Reuben Abati,the presidential spokesman told journalists in Abuja.
The Boko Haram, in a youtube broadcast on Saturday asked Mr Jonathan to either resign or change to Islam before it could cease fire.
“We do not kill women and children but those who have offended us, arrested our people and kill them,” the group said in the wake of a promise by Jonathan to end its activities before the end of June this year.
Mr Abati said “When Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for President Jonathan in the 2011 general election, they knew they were voting for a Christian…So, it amounts to sheer blackmail for any individual or group to ask the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to convert to Islam.”
For about two years, bombings and gun attacks by Boko Haram have become commonplace in the northern part of the country including  Abuja.
The sect which has made negotiation with the government impossible said it is seeking the conversion of Nigeria to an Islamic state.
*if this people are really Muslims, i wonder why there are still bomb blast during Ramadan.

Shooting at Sikh Temple Leaves Seven Dead

Two weeks after the horrific shooting in Aurora, Colorado claimed 12 lives, another gunman opened fire yesterday inside a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin.
At least seven people, including the perpetrator, were found dead at the scene, with Police Chief Bradley Wentlandt telling reporters that a wounded officer returned shots at the unnamed culprit and took his life, ending the massacre.
Four bodies were found inside the temple and three outside of it, including the gunman.

Darshan Dhaliwal, one of the temple's leaders, said the final tally is unknown. As as the motivations of the shooter. "Our dear ones and near ones are injured and hurt, and we are trying to find out what happened," Dhaliwal told WTMJ.
The Sikh religion originated in northern India in the early 1500s and is comprised of approximately 25 million people around the world, 700,000 of whom reside in the United States. It's unknown, of course, if the killer was specifically targeting members of the religion.

21year Old Nigerian Player die of Heart Attack

A Nigerian player, Henry Chinonso Ihelewere, has died after suffering a cardiac arrest during a friendly match between Romanian second division teams CS Delta Tulcea and FC Balotesti on Sunday.

Delta’s Ihelewere, 21, collapsed with no-one around him only 15 minutes after coming on as a second-half substitute. The game was played in the town of Baltoesti, north of Bucharest.

He was taken to hospital but he never regained consciousness. The striker had been playing in Romania since 2007 when he joined Farul Constanta. He later moved to Tulcea in 2010.

The story of Mujahid Dokubo-Asari is open for every body to carry out intense investigation and scrutiny. If Dokubo-Asari has benefited from kidnapping, oil bunkering, or from the government the evidence can easily be obtain. Instead the government of Nigeria has arrested me and detain me more than 46 times. 

Up till this moment I have a treason charge hanging over my head. I have not pleaded with President Jonatha (GEAJ) to discontinue the proceedings against me. Even when Ijaw elders and leaders have continue to call on the government to lift the charges against me. I have always maintain that I do not want any pardon or amnesty from an occupation government that have confiscated my land and resources.

Whenever I make superior argument against their porous positions they resort to baseless allegations which even the Nigerian government in her desperation has not made against me. The government has all the chances to bring charges on thief, armed robbery, oil bunkering, kidnapping, extortion and other criminal charges against me they couldn't because I have never committed such crimes they went on an endless voyage of discovery still they could not prove their charges against me they kept me in prison for 22months, 10 months 11 days in their underground dungeons.

I did not give up my believe in the morality and justice of my course.

A taxi driver, Femi Ajibola, will never forget July 1, 2012 in a hurry. At about 5.30 pm on that day, he received a phone call from a young woman in the Lekki area of Lagos and had quickly answered the subsequent invitation to pick her up.

“The lady introduced her as Susie. She called me to come and pick her and her friend. They told me to come pick them up at Mobolaji Estate near Lekki Second Roundabout. Later, I took them to a hotel at Lekki Phase I to meet one of their friends.

Despite people’s objection which the Areafada had considered normal, ThisRanch church hall at the silverbird gallery was filled to capacity as different people trooped to the church in order to hear, and probably speculate about the Areafada’s preaching.

Blessing Okagbare finishes last in women's 100m final
